Presidents Report

We were notified last week that Burnaby Schools will be fast tracked for their vaccines. The Superintendent needs to be recognized for her tireless work in advocating for our members to be added to the list based on community spread of COVID in Burnaby. By now I hope that everyone has been able to book and even received your first shot. There was a lot of advocacy on behalf of the unions and board office that all staff were covered.

Labour Board passed that everyone can access up to 3 hrs to get the vaccine.  It is requested that you schedule this outside of your work hours. It is board paid time, the board has authority to ask you what time your vaccine was scheduled for.  This time is not intended to be used for vacation or time off.  It is strictly used for the vaccine and they can refuse added time off, such as vacation/gratuity.  It is sick time to deal with the possible after effects of the vaccine.  The 3 hours are only to facilitate the booking time.  The other issue is we all have to remember is that having a vaccine does not loosen or change the current guidelines for COVID protocol.  Once you have both vaccines you will have immunity to serious illness but you can still carry and contract COVID.  We need to continue the current protocols.  We will revisit things in September.


We have had lots of calls, lots of questions re COVID.  Also, members needing information on their rights and have some clarity.


Mike would like to emphasize the right to refuse unsafe work.  We have in the union office little cards with the information of what can be refused and what you need to do.  We will be sending them out to the schools.  An employer must not persuade you to not report unsafe work.  On a Provincial level, we have a lot of information on violence especially for EA’s.  This information will be available soon.  It isn’t just for violence.  You have to say no and communicate with your supervisor.  It is then to be investigated.  You are entitled to do other work at your site until it is resolved.  Email is a key way to communicate as it is in writing.  Know your Health & Safety representative at your site and get your concerns in the minutes.

As of this report if everyone sends in their receipts and completes their course and gets paid out there will still be $4915.69 available and if not used it will be going back to the District on July 1, 2021.  I urge all members to send in their receipts to make sure they get paid out at the end of June.  The money does not roll over.

$500/year available to members.  New rules; you can take a course that isn’t directly related to your job but to another CUPE position in the district.  Send in your application to the union office. Next meeting is May 20, 2021

Donation to Moscrop Dry Grad – Standing Donation

Uniform Committee – We are close to having the catalogue out for distribution.  The pricing will be about the same.  The items will also change a bit.  See your foreman if you aren’t able to log in to see the catalogue.  Some of the products and sizes are back ordered until 2023.  We will do our best to get everyone their product.  These are products for the trades and custodians.  The committee shops around for the best value and product.

Motion to donate $2500 to the food bank


Last meeting there was a discussion in regards to EA 3 during summer school.  If they elect to work with their same student during summer they will continue their EA 3 pay during the summer.  The key part is that it has to with the same student as during the year.  We are still trying to work out other situations.  We can’t go backwards to previous summers to file a grievance but we will make sure for this summer.
