Presidents Report

As we wrap up what I consider the longest yet fastest school year that was, I would like to start by thanking everyone for stepping up to not only help the students we support but also for doing their part supporting our front-line workers and even the economy by providing care to students which allowed the schools to continue functioning as we needed them to. We provided safe and secure environments and were able to lessen the harsh realities of Covid in our workplaces as well as for others. Great work CUPE 379!

A couple of outstanding points of clarification before we end this school year.

-We understand there are still members involved with bumping (I believe we are in the third round), PLEASE contact the union office if you are unsure what your rights are. A steward will assist you with all aspects of utilizing seniority to bump or bid on a new position.

-We understand the uncertainties with the remaining budget cuts that impact our members and continue to advocate on those members behalf. We are still working to reduce the impact on all departments but especially the impact on day custodians which have a direct impact on all of our health and safety.

-I want to remind our many members working over the summer, especially summer school, that our office is open, and we are here to support any questions or concerns you might have.

I hope those that can enjoy some time off, find the time and place that allow them to recharge and unwind for some well-deserved rest. I would also like to thank the CUPE 379 Executive and Stewards who continue to volunteer their time to support the membership and work tirelessly to ensure our collective agreement and member’s health and safety are upheld.

As we all have heard, there is still uncertainty as to what September will bring, we are optimistic that we will be closer to the regular opening we all hope to be in, for September. Notices will be provided as the situation unfolds in the coming months (https://bcschools.cupe.ca). We know you will all do your part in staying safe while enjoying the summer break. Take care and try to have a little fun.

We have a few grievances, but nothing has gone to stage 2.

We are here for you.  Thank you to our shop stewards and executive for all the work helping our members.

Burnaby’s Covid numbers have been relatively low. We are engaging with members and communicating.  Numbers are going down.  A lot of people still have anxiety about things opening up and changing again.

Thank you to all of maintenance getting all the extra sinks in, touchpoint cleaners keeping us safe.  Thank you to Health and Safety Committees.  There have been a lot of new H & S issues put in place due to COVID but we still need to remember the ongoing issues, such as keeping our members safe.
